One way to cut costs while grocery shopping is to shop smart. Consider some of these ideas for your next shopping trip.

With rising prices in just about everything, it is no wonder that the average person is looking for ways to cut costs. Luckily, there are many things that you can do to save money at the grocery store. Every penny you save is a good thing, so follow some of these tips the next time you head to the market.

Make a List

Professional bargain shoppers will tell you that in order to save money when you shop, you should carefully make a list and stick to it. If you go without a list, you are certainly more tempted to pick up items that you don’t really need, or pick up impulse items. Make a menu for the week, check your pantry before you head out the door, and make sure you stay to your list.

Buy Store Brands

You can save a wad of money by buying store brands at the grocery store. Before you say no to this idea, think about this. Many store brand items are actually made by the big label companies and just packaged differently. You can get an item up to half off just by getting the store brand—and you probably will not taste a difference at all. Things such as peanut butter, bread, crackers, fruit, milk, pudding, baking items, and even cheese are going to taste the same whether you pay full price or not.

Use Store Ads and Coupons

Many shoppers like to save money at the check out by shopping for sales using store ads and coupons. Some stores have special discount cards that they will scan when you check out. These will give you access to store sale prices and you can use your coupons in conjunction with these sales. If you can shop at different stores, this is a great way to get the lowest prices at the store.

Buy in Bulk

Bulk stores, such as Sam’s and Costco, are great for saving money, too. Of course, these stores are also filled with impulse items, so if you are disciplined, then you can often save money on the items you need. Buy hamburger meat and chicken in bulk and then repackage it in smaller portions for your freezer when you get home. You can also stock up on toilet paper and paper towels to save money, too.

Shop Closeouts or Overruns

When you go grocery shopping, keep your eye for bargains on closeout or overrun items. You may find bakery items marked down as they expiration date nears, and meat as well. You can also shop closeout stores such as Big Lots for great prices on common grocery items like snacks and cereal. Many times these are still good, however, the packaging has changed or the supplier needs to clear the items out.

These are just a few suggestions that will help you save big bucks on your next grocery visit. The cost of living is getting higher every day, so learn how to save where you can by shopping smart.
