Instead of spending tons of money this year, make creative and unique gifts for friends and family. A homemade gift is much more affordable and memorable!

So many occasions call for gifts: Christmas, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Weddings, House Warmings, Baby Shower, Graduation, Bridal Shower, Confirmation, Promotion, New Parent, New Job, Engagement, Valentine’s Day, and so on. It can seem like non-stop gift-giving, which can add stress to the bank account. Instead of spending money on forgettable gifts, consider giving one of these homemade gifts.

"When We First Met" Book

This doesn’t have to be limited to a romantic partner. Consider it for friends as well. Include details from the first meeting, as well as significant events in the year. Get as creative as you like. For a formal touch, take it to Kinko’s or a copy store to have the book spiral bound. Laminate the front and back pages to make sure it lasts.

Photo Calendar

Make it yourself or order one online from Walmart or other photo stores. Use creativity and a consistent theme throughout.

"Daily Reminders of My Love"

Type 365 different messages expressing love to the gift receiver. Cut them out and put them in a decorated jar or box. Now the person has a year of precious daily reminders.

Naughty Stocking

Limited to a romantic partner. Purchase a stocking (sold at the Dollar Store) and fill it with as many naughty things as possible. Again, get creative. This can be given for a variety of occasions – think outside the box.

Personalized Frame

Purchase a frame (again, the Dollar Store sells frames) and personalize it. Using paint or makers, write names, poems, quotes, or meaningful adjectives. Get as creative as possible. This is best if given with a picture already inside the frame.

Framed Art or Poem

Paint, draw, or sketch a picture. It doesn’t have to be perfect – it doesn’t even have to be that good. Make it meaningful and frame it. This can be done with a poem as well.

Hangover Basket

Is there a special person who tends to overindulge on alcohol occasionally? Make a personalized hangover basket: water bottle, aspirin, Pepto Bismol, antacids, mini-massager, instant coffee, coffee mug, washcloths, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and other creative hangover remedies.

Duct Tape Wallet

For the right personality, a homemade duct tape wallet can be a huge hit. Instructions for making a duct tape wallet: use only duct tape, experiment, and have fun. Check out these instructions for suggested steps in making the duct tape wallet.

Framed Pet

For the person who loves their pet, give them a framed picture of their furry family member. It’s something that pet-lovers enjoy, but don’t feel comfortable doing themselves.

Poster

Make a poster. Chemistry fanastic? Make a colorful periodic table. Include others art, personal art, poems, sayings, quotations, pictures – anything to make it personal and fun. This can be very cheap - $.50 for a poster board and use items around the house – or print pictures from the computer.

Personalized Song

Karaoke songs are perfect because the lyrics are taken out. Choose a song and re-write the lyrics. Change only a few words or change them all. Perform it live or record it. Performing it live has the advantage of removing any proof or evidence (if singing is not your strength). Even if the singing is bad, the gift will be great.

Worry Rock

Have a worry-wart in your life? Find or buy a smooth rock. Write a note about the significance of a worry rock – which is supposed to be kept in the pocket of the worrier and rubbed when the individual is really worried. It helps to relieve stress and anxiety. What a great way to show you care!

Instead of breaking the bank for that gift-giving occasion, take the time to create something unique (and affordable!). Homemade gifts are memorable, fun, and cheap. There’s no better way to go when it come to gift-giving. For more ideas, check out Creative Gifts for Your Loved Ones.
