How Families Can Spend Less This Yuletide Season

Oct 6, 2009 Wei Yin Wong

Buy gifts on sale, shop at discount stores or directly from manufacturers and use discount vouchers and credit card reward points to spend less this Christmas.

Typically, celebrating Christmas means excessive spending. Money spent on gifts, parties, decorations, holidays and food can be a big financial strain on families. Pick up some budget Christmas shopping ideas to avoid getting into debt after the fun is over.

Here are some useful tips to spend less this Yuletide season.

Buy Gifts on Sale Throughout the Year

Spread Christmas shopping throughout the year. Ideally, start on Boxing Day when there are huge sales to clear stocks. Keep watching out for other sales over time to pick up great bargains. Toys, bedding, books, wines and accessories are just a few items that can be bought early and kept for later dates. Another big advantage of buying gifts all year round is that shoppers beat the mad Christmas crowd just before the big celebration.

Buy Directly From Manufacturers or Wholesalers

To spend less, buy directly from manufacturers or wholesalers. Many items can actually be purchased for up to half of the recommended retail prices. Sometimes, even branded items can be bought this way. Watch out for advertisements in the newspaper and drive around commercial or industrial areas for direct to public sale signs. Again, do this all year round.

Use Discount Vouchers

Discount vouchers that arrive in the mailbox are often treated as junk mail. However, some offers are really fantastic, particularly those for household items, wines and clothing. Use these to enjoy big Christmas savings.

Use Credit Card Reward Points

Credit card companies charge very high interest rates and heavy penalties for late repayment. So make the best of all the benefits offered, especially reward points. Go through the reward catalogue and decide how to best use the points to redeem free gifts. Reward points from loyalty cards can also be used in the same way.

Take Advantage of Lay-by Services During Sales

This is like buying on credit without the interest. Just pay a small deposit for items selected during sales and wait until before Christmas to pick them up. Shoppers can also spread their payments to reduce the pinch of having to pay a big lump sum when collecting the items. Paying by lay-by is also great for hiding big Christmas presents from kids.

Buy Christmas Presents Online

The Internet has revolutionized the way people shop. Shoppers can browse, compare products and prices and buy Christmas presents online. Online stores typically sell products at lower prices too compared to traditional retailers. Plus, there is no need to jostle among the crowd, queue up to pay or driving round and round looking for parking during the Christmas rush. The madness is 10 times worse with young kids in tow. Do, however, buy online only from reputable merchants and those with secure payment services.

Join Book Clubs

Books make great Christmas presents. Book shops often have book clubs that offer members the privilege of buying books at a big discount. So why not consider joining a book club or two to spend less on gifts?

Christmas doesn’t have to be an extravagant affair. Families should make budget Christmas shopping a habit every year. Spend less by shopping for gifts all year round during sales, buying directly from manufacturers and wholesalers, using discount vouchers and credit card reward points, opting for lay-by when there are sales, shopping for gifts online or joining book clubs.
